Just off of Gerhardt's extensive campus is the magical town of Fortune. Although not considered big compared to other magical towns, Fortune is capable of housing up to 500 wizards and witches, however, there is a full time residence of around 360 that live in Fortune year round. The town was first founded the same year as Gerhardt in 1579 by the founders and the other teachers in order to help support the school and allow the students to get out of Gerhardt's campus in a controlled and safe way. The original residents of Fortune were some of the first students family and wizards and witches that were looking for a quiet place away from the hustle and bustle of the larger magical communities who wanted to set up a quiet life.
The main shops that are visited by the students in Fortune are Honeybunch's Chocolate shoppe, The Four Wanderers Tavern - for the best food outside of the grand mess and the only real place for alcoholic drinks near Gerhardt, Deschamps all style clothing shop - renown for having the latest fashion and a ridiculously large selection of clothing for any witch or wizard, and Canoers Bookshop - having all types of magical books from common cleaning charms for beginners to advanced magic texts. They are positioned along the central road along with two inns at opposite ends of the town and a plethora of private apartments, houses, and cottages that fan out through Fortune.
On the days that the students of Gerhardt are permitted to visit the village, all of the residents come out to chat with the kids and see what they had been learning. Having students visit is one of the highlights of living in Fortune. Not having many visitors throughout the year, they will take whatever visitors they can get for a change in pace.
During graduation time at Gerhardt, Fortune swells in population as family of the soon to be graduates swarm there for the ceremony and sometimes tend to stay the night in Fortune before returning back to their homes the following day. During the summer months Fortune is a lazy, quiet community that is completely picturesque without any real excitement. It is a hideaway for witches and wizards that want a small town feel for a vacation, but not many choose to vacation at Fortune in favor of several other magical towns that aren't so remote.
Some Professors of Gerhardt have lived in Fortune over the many years both during their tenure, and in their retirement giving Gerhardt a fair amount of substitute teachers. However, no teacher has lived in Fortune since 1963, meaning that since that time, there have been no readily available substitutes for emergencies. Despite that, Fortune still is a big support system for the magic school, and will continue to be for many more years in the future.
