Room for Improvement

I think it's safe to say that no matter what profession you are in or go into that there is always room for improvement. There are lessons that you will still learn, and problems that you will encounter. Writing is no different in that regard.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not the best writer that has ever lived, far from it. Reading through some of my early drafts you'd wonder if I knew how to write at all. I'm learning how to write better daily, which I hope will come through in each subsequent book in the Saga that gets published. We all need to improve in our skills regardless of our jobs, because it makes us grow.

There is a quote I heard not too long ago that struck me profoundly on improvement:

"It's human nature to gripe, but I'm going ahead and doing the best I can" ~ Elvis Presley.

Although he doesn't directly address improvement, the quote can be applied to it quite well. It inspired me to be better at the very least.

The more you improve, the better and higher quality you can produce. The days of quality versus quantity seem to have left us, but I still prefer to put out quality work instead of many subpar pieces. I tend to give more time to quality items than things that were made for quantity reasons. I'd like to think that there are others out there still that have that same mentality, and that gives me another reason to improve my writing.

I would rather read a book series that you can see the author's skills increasing with each book rather than a basic level in each book. It doesn't have to be extremely obvious improvement, but improvement nonetheless. There is no better statement to end this post on than what my former band director has said many times over. It's hard to be good, but boy is it fun.
