Nonmagical studies is a unique class at Gerhardt since it is required only for the first three years, and then is an elective after that for students to choose. For Purebloods, it is a culture shock to see this entirely different culture than they are used to since the magical world is almost stuck in Victorian times. That is part of the reason why it is mandatory for the first three years to prevent hostilities from occurring between the Pureblood, Halfblood and Nonblood students. However it has proven to not be completely foolproof in preventing blood status hostilities. It still is credited though for improving relations from the sheer iciness to willing to cooperate together in the United States.
The class was added to Gerhardt's class itinerary in 1660 when the possibility of more and more non magical people and magical folk would be mingling in the what would come to be the United States. At first there was tension and pushback from parents on the decision, but the school held firm. As a result Gerhardt was the most welcoming to Nonblood students showing that it was possible to get along together, and led the charge in creating that welcoming atmosphere for Nonblood students. Some Congress officials say that the school's decision helped spur the suppression of blood supremacist ideals within North America, although that is up for debate.
Professor Eva Rose has this to say on her class:
"Some of you may think that this class is a waste of your time. Some may think that you don't need to attend this class at all. You all are mistaken. This class will help you understand the nonmagical world that we must live in harmony with, and will help you see that perhaps they are just as advanced in some areas as we are. There are some items that the nonmagical people have that are very helpful for us, and I think you will find this class very interesting. Let us begin, shall we?"
Many students have taken Nonmagical studies as an elective in later years that it is practically a core course. It is also one of the more popular classes since it covers more discovery of new items and artifacts rather than a lecture heavy class. For many, this is a welcome change in comparison to the other classes that are offered at the school. To date, almost all of the teachers of this class have been Nonbloods themselves with the exception of Eva Rose and the original teacher Ida Rose - Eva Rose's grandmother.
