Alcohol. It is something that no matter where you are in the world, you will most likely see, or hear about. It is one of those things that is well integrated into our society, for good or for bad. For the Magical world, this is no different. Alcohol won't be featured in the Saga for a while yet, not until around book 5 or 6, but I thought you'd like to get to know the drinks that Lily's world has to offer.
Wine
There are several different types of wine in the magical world, each with its own specific taste and use. Avalon Elven Wine is the most expensive of the wines, as it is only created in small batches. It is considered to be the best wine that exists within the magical world. The other main wine that exists is Ivy wine. This wine is cheaper and more readily abundant, being considered the favorite for most wizards and witches.
Beer
The most commonly drunk of all the alcohols, beer is inexpensive and easily obtainable. Nearly every wizarding home will have some beer in it, and it is sold in copious amount of ways and flavors to the masses. Beer is the first real alcohol that most wizards and witches drink once they turn legal age due to the low cost, and the easy access to it that exists. However, if it is a Pureblood witch or wizard, and they are from a prominent Pureblood House, then they will be able to afford any of the other alcohols as their first real drink other than Apple Cider.
Every country has their own version of beer, so depending on where you are, the taste of the beer that is consumed will be different.
Goblin Gin
The only alcohol that is produced by goblins, this is a potent alcohol that not many are able to stomach. Most wizards and witches don't drink Goblin Gin, it is almost exclusively a goblin alcohol only which has been strengthened over eons with multiple goblin uprisings and rebellions. It's rumored that halfbreeds and other magical creatures like Sirens might drink it too, but it has never been witnessed before, or confirmed.
Inferno
Out of all of the magical alcohol, this one is the most fascinating. The exact date of Inferno's creation is unknown; however, it is theorized that it goes back to before the Hyperkasen Cataclysm. It is the only known magical alcohol that is engineered specifically for Purebloods. It is served at every Ball and gathering that the magical world has, and plays a key role in determining a person's true heritage. Purebloods cannot get drunk off of Inferno, they metabolize it nearly as quickly as they consume it. The most they can ever get off of it is a slight buzz.
For Halfboods, it is just like any other alcohol to them, there isn't a real difference that they see. But for Nonbloods, that's where the difference is. It is extremely alcoholic to them, to the point that one glass will cause them to get blackout drunk, if not thrown into alcohol poisoning. For this reason, not many Nonbloods even attempt to consume the drink, avoiding it at all costs.
Although Inferno has a taste of pumpkin and cinnamon to it, the more you drink, and the more intoxicated you get, the cinnamon flavor overrides everything else causing it to have a very burning feeling when swallowed. It has been described that when you feel like you are drinking liquid flames that you should stop, because you are too drunk to continue without harm coming to you. This only applies to Halfbloods and Nonbloods, since only Purebloods taste the perfect mixture of pumpkin and cinnamon.
Wailin' Whisky
Of the several different types of whisky that are available in the magical world, the most popular is Wailin' Whisky. Out of all the alcohols, Wailin' Whisky gives the person who consumes it an almost superhuman sense of courage that can lead to very poor decision making in a very short amount of time. It gained its name from those that consumed it, and upon getting highly drunk started wailing nearly uncontrollably. Despite the scene of these wailing drunkards, the name stuck to the alcohol. It is one of the most fiery of the alcohols, second only to Inferno.
Champagne
One of the most lavish alcohols that the magical world has, champagne is served at all of the most elite galas, weddings, and gatherings in the magical world. There isn't much of a difference between the magical and non magical versions of this alcohol that many know of, other than the magical champagne was magically aged, taking a fraction of the time.
No Pureblood wedding would be complete without champagne being served, and several Congress officials only drink champagne as their alcohol of choice.
Apple Cider
Apple Cider is the only alcohol on this list that breaks the legal age law the magical world has, and that is through a loophole. Witches and wizards 16 years old can consume the cider, since there is hardly any real alcohol content within it. There are six different types of apple cider, all of which have varying levels of apple flavoring. However, the more apple taste within it, the more popular it sells. In the town of Fortune, nearly every business has some stock of apple cider on hand for when the students of Gerhardt come into town for shopping and weekend visits.
Banshee Brandy
This is consumed almost exclusively as a post formal dinner drink, and is popular among Halfbloods and Nonbloods. Originally created in Ireland, it has since spread from there to global magical settlements and cities. The main place where it is manufactured is still in Ireland. It's thought that banshees had initially created the drink and would consume it before their screams would be heard by people. This has gained the status of legend, but the Irish wizards decided to keep the name for their wider marketing efforts.
Mermaid Ale
This is the only known alcoholic drink that is produced by ocean dwellers, and is popular among coastlines and islands within the magical world. Mermaids primarily create it, and the recipe is held strictly secret. The slight seaweed undertones to the ale turn some people off of it, but the variety of flavors that the ale can come in give it a large selection to choose from. To date there are 33 uniquely different flavors that Mermaid Ale comes in.
